Issue 4: Jungle
In the jungle, the mighty jungle, nothing is truly asleep. InkLab’s revamped fourth issue features comics, interviews, short stories, photos, and illustrations that unravel the stories within and trace the state of India’s countless jungles. Ranging from funny comic strips to visual folktales to a satirical newspaper spread - Jungle has it all.
- “विकास की अंधेरी सुरंग” is a poignant poetic narrative about the apathy towards the collateral damage of destructive government projects, written by Manoj Kujur and beautifully illustrated by Amit Makwana.
- “The Midnight Ritual” is an eerie comic, written by Shivi Bhatnagar and drawn by Aditya Pandit that explores the relationship between two siblings and their dead parents against the backdrop of red sandalwood trees and the people who smuggle them.
- “Woody Alan”, written and drawn by Arya Rao, is an absurd, surreal silent comic about a man and his repeated vain attempts to fell a tree.
- “InkLab Interviews Raza Kazmi”, a wildlife historian and conservationist about cheetahs, sourcing information from Colonial era illustrations, and the state of India’s dwindling forests.
- “Jungle Times”, written by Shikhant Sablania and Arya Rao, and illustrated by Bhavishya Datta, features the front page of the fictional Jungledweep’s leading newspaper, and the ridiculous ongoings in that bonkers country.
- “When Our Forests Will Turn Silent” is a folktale-esque rendering of the death of a forest. Written by Vinayak Vyas and meticulously illustrated by Ritu Pandey, it is a tale of heartbreak, sorrow, and the migration of a people.
- “From Hunters to Scholars” is an excerpt from a 2019 photo-series by photographer and professor Nithil Dennis. It offers a careful insight into the Pardhi Tribe and the husband-wife duo responsible for the education of countless Pardhi children.
- “Startup of the Year” by Ajab Tambuwala is an absolutely bananas story about an enterprising primate and his entrepreneurial efforts. Featuring the worst/best alcoholic beverage you’ve ever heard of!
- “Pages from a found journal…” is a captivating short story by horror aficionado Swapnil Narendra (with illustrations by Shikhant Sablania) that delve into the sinister contents of a lost diary. Something about death, greed, and a forbidden ritual…
- “Roots of the Forest Act” is a short guide written in the wake of 2023’s controversial forest bill by Bhavishya Datta about the history of India’s various Forest (and related) Acts.
- “Be-Khabar” by Bhavishya Datta is a short 6-panel comic strip that follows a cameraman and his wandering lens.
- “InkLab Interviews Vijay Dhasmana”, a rewilder and eco-restoration practitioner, and one of the leading figures behind the restoration of Aravali Biodiversity Park, about what it means to restore a forest in the shadow of a city like Gurgaon.
- “Djinn and Juice” by Shikhant Sablania follows the drunken conversation between Mangal and Sultan that meanders into territory that may have devastating consequences.
- “For the Love of Comics Recommends” are Angshuman Chakraborty’s (creator of the YouTube channel For the Love of Comics” 5 best Jungali comics recommendations, so that you know what to read after you finish Jungle.
